Distillation is an important idea to consider when spending time with Oliver Mann’s Slow Bark, an album that amounts to eight paired songs, a scattering of musical sketches and suite of remixes. Recorded between various opera contracts over the last four years, the record traces a new strain of Mann’s work, stripped to its bones.

The sublime physicality of Mann’s vocal is almost a given – a bass-baritone that embraces and defies his operatic training – but its his uncanny tenor as a songwriter that is articulated more clearly in this collection than in earlier works. Where Oliver Mann Sings (self-released, 2005) resonated with stunning idiosyncrasies and dramatic odes and The Possum Wakes at Night (Preservation, 2008) shimmered with superb arrangements and moments of flourishing experimental pop, Slow Bark broods and creaks with a strength of storytelling and description and evocation – little else but skeletal, decelerated guitar motifs, glimmers of blues harmonica in tow.

Indeed, the familiarity of Mann’s tools fails to tie him down to archetypes. Previously released in part as an extremely limited 7” series, these works (recorded in part by Stereolab’s Andy Ramsay) sprawl and unfurl laterally, striking ballads dissipating into lingering codas ensconced in space and atmosphere.

In recent years Mann has played alongside anyone from Joanna Newsom (US) and Nicola Ratti (Italy), to Sarah Blasko (Aus) and Mick Turner (Dirty Three, Aus) while steadily building a reputation and career within an operatic context – including various roles with Opera Australia and the Victorian Opera. And it is this very coalescence between Mann’s work within the classical cannon and his re-imagining of it that make his oeuvre so intriguing.

With reduction – with the shedding of excesses – Mann’s craft has re-emerged with great clarity and resolve on Slow Bark. His voice – and the scenes it paints – resonates louder than ever.

about

Oliver Mann Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne bass-baritone Oliver Mann’s output is defined by its adherence to the classical canon as much as its re-imagining. His wanderings into arcane folk and experimental song-writing craft – which have brought about two acclaimed full-length albums - are cues to his artistry as much as his growing classical repertoire.
